How much sick leave do I accrue each pay period?
Employees who work a 7.5-hour workday accrue 4.6875 hours each pay period. Employees who work a 6-hour workday accrue 3.75 hours each pay period and employees who work a 5.5-hour workday accrue 3.4375 hours each pay period, and 8.00-hour employees accrue 4.99 hours each pay period.

Are sick leave accruals prepaid?
No, accruals are earned each pay date for active status employees.

I feel that my sick leave balance has a discrepancy or has multiple plans.

What happens to my sick leave after I resign from the Atlanta Public Schools?
A certificated employee who transfers from the Atlanta Public Schools to another public school system in the state of Georgia may transfer up to 45 days of sick leave earned after July 1, 1978. State statute requires that the transfer of leave must take place within one year of separation from the previous position. It is the employee's responsibility to request this transfer from the former system.

When am I required to submit a doctor’s note?
If you miss three consecutive days, an employee must submit a doctor's note upon returning to work on the fourth day.

What is FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act)?
The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) is a federal law designed to balance the needs of employers and employees in circumstances when employees must take extended medical leaves for serious medical conditions, including pregnancy or to care for family members. FMLA gives eligible employees the right to take up to 12 weeks of job-protected leave (or up to 26 weeks in the case of military caregiver leave) with continued benefits for immediate family or medical reasons.

Is FMLA paid leave?
No, employees are paid based on their accrued sick leave. Accrual balances can be found in the Employee Self Service (ESS) Portal. Please refer to ESS menu - Personal Information - Leave Balances.

What is the difference between continuous FMLA and Intermittent FMLA?
Continuous FMLA is when an employee takes leave in a block of time. Intermittent FMLA is when an employee takes leave as needed but is still working.

When should I request FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act)?
You may request FMLA for more than five (5) consecutive days missed. If the leave is foreseeable, you must submit the request for leave thirty (30) days prior to their leave start date. If the leave is not foreseeable, the leave request must be submitted as soon as possible.

Who should I submit a leave request or paperwork to?
Employees can fax their completed leave paperwork to 404-802-1302 or email the completed paperwork to LeaveRequests@atlanta.k12.ga.us.

What is the process for educational leave?
Is there a form that I must complete? Yes, an employee must complete the Request for Study Leave Form. To qualify, you must be employed with the district for three (3) consecutive years, receive the approval of the employee’s supervisor and executive director/department head, request the leave in writing to the Absence Management department, provide proof of enrollment, and provide proof of successful completion for each term the employee is on approved educational leave.

What is the process for jury duty? Do I have to complete a form?
Employees must submit to their principal/supervisor a copy of the jury duty summons as soon as it is received. There is no form to be completed for jury duty.

What documentation should I submit to request military leave?
To request military leave, an employee must submit their military orders to the Absence Management department.

I had death in my family, do I receive bereavement pay?
In the case of a death in an employee’s immediate family, or of any relative by blood, marriage or adoption currently living in the employee’s home, the Principal or Supervisor may authorize an employee to use up to a maximum of three (3) accumulated sick leave days as bereavement leave.

Does the district offer paid parental leave?
Yes. All eligible employees may be eligible for Paid Parental Leave for a qualifying life event such as (childbirth, adoption, or foster care of a child). You may qualify after six continuous months of employment. The maximum amount of paid parental leave that may be taken by an eligible employee during a rolling 12-month period is 240 hours.
